So a little while ago I decided to try my hand at writing a blog. I know everyone and their dog has a gaming blog these days but after much deliberation over whether or not I should choose a different subject I came to the conclusion that I don’t give a monkeys whether everyone else has done one. I realise it will end up being a handful of people at best that read this blog but as long as even a couple of people get even the paultriest bit of enjoyment out of it then mission accomplished. That having said, I still intend to fill some sort of niche. See from what I can assertain, there are plenty of blogs, news sites and gaming forums and communities that do game reviews, many do up-to-the-minute, just released games, some do retro reviews, but very few review games which came out maybe a few months to a couple of years ago, about the only one which kept me coming back was the ‘WeView’ feature over on Eurogamer.net. Now I realise that may be for good reason but I always found myself being interested in visiting games which I’d missed the first time around. In fact some of the best games I’ve ever played found their way into my posesssion when I picked them up browsing my local gamestation’s second hand shelves or when I was procrastinating on Amazon one day. So I decided to focus the blog (at least the review side) on that, hence the name: ‘Re-Play’. There will be other things too, a smattering of related topics, some tech gear maybe, who knows.
As for me outside of my gaming interests, I’m a designer/engineer-in-training by day. I work in the gas industry in Bath, England and recently graduated from Bournemouth University in Industrial Design. I also play in a blues band and have been practicing martial arts for the last 10 years or so.
I like to think I’m fairly unbiased as a reviewer (don’t we all?); I own all three major systems including a ps3, Xbox 360, Wii and a PC as well as an android handset. I will say I’m a little biassed against Apple and as such you won’t find too many iOS reviews on Re-Play as I don’t own an iOS device (a shame as ‘Spider: Secret of Bryce Manor’ was one of my favourite mobile games a year or so back). I have been a lifelong Nintendo fan, owning most of their consoles from the SNES up (SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, N64, Gameboy Advanced, Gamecube, DS, Wii, and 3DS. Very much looking forward to the Wii U). However, I promise my sense of loyalty to them isn’t so great that I can’t call them out when they screw up (as you’ll see in an upcoming review of last year’s ‘Skyward Sword’). I also used to co-run a gaming podcast with my good friend Alex Todd who now writes for GSM Arena. We managed to keep up a weekly podcast called ‘The Meat Grinder’ (which you can check out by clicking here) throughout most of our final year at university…an accomplishment all by itself I think! Anyway that’s long enough for the inaugral blog entry. Expect entries every other day or so and I’ll try to post reviews once a week. Watch this space.
